Why Olympics Don't Interest Me

Or at least why it doesn't get me excited. I don't have the time and energy to get used to seeing all these competitors throughout the world. Some of the events don't hold my interest. I don't have a lot a reasons. It's one of these things that might surprise people. Sorry if that bothers you, but with working a job, it's hard to find time to see something that I could like. Some stories I'll definitely read, but I'm going to have to pass.

The only other thing that doesn't interest me is NBC. They have had a stranglehold on the Olympics since 1988. Four different decades and they still hold exclusivity on it until 2032. The ratings have not been all that good. Nothing has reached 20 million viewers at any point. I think people are getting burned at how the network does its coverage. Probably tape delays and other stupid shit that turns off viewers. It's not the only reason, but there's more to it if I had to guess. The 2016 Olympics saw a big decline and this year is worse. The pandemic hasn't helped, but that should not be used as a shield for criticism.

So there you go. Sports championships hold my interest a lot more and are more exciting for me compared to the Olympics.

Peacock TV: More Saturation?

The spring season is approaching very soon. I've talked about this app before a couple times, but NBC Universal is going full force in April for Xfinity customers with their Peacock TV app. In July, others will get their opportunity to watch some of their favorite films and shows that the company has made.

While it is nice to see competition, the reality is that we are towards that breaking point where saturation will get very high. HBOMax is due in May. Add in Disney Plus from November and a handful of other apps and sites, you have people maybe tightening up their budget on what they want. But do you want to watch more than The Office? Or any of those Dick Wolf shows? I know I want to see something such as Psych, especially as their new film is set to debut on that app whenever it gets a release date.

But I also wonder if it will be more than just hipsters and other young people who will bite at the app. I'm struggling to think of other shows that the app could have. I say this because NBC does have their own shows that they produced, but what can they use that didn't get the backing of a major producer in conjunction like Warner Brothers or Fox? Anything from Universal themselves they could easily get the programs and films they have made. There's not much else that can be said. I just wonder if it would be sustainable enough to even last a year or two.

The acid test in April better make them excited and nervous at the same time. Inevitably, some of their programs from rival apps will go to them soon, but will it be enough? Only way to tell if people bite the bullet and have the patience to wait until July.

A Stream Of Competition

The go to sites for streaming is Netflix and Hulu. They have provided their share of programming that is from other companies along with material they have created themselves. There are also sites like Amazon and a few others that have jumped into this craze, but a couple more could spell disaster for them.

I'm talking about Disney and NBC. These two are set to have their own streaming services in the next year or two. Disney has a huge backlog of films and shows they can put on there.  Their own stuff, Lucasfilm and Marvel. With Fox, a lot more can be added. They are sitting on thousands of well known stuff. How can it go wrong? Depends on the price and what films Disney censors. It would mean butchered versions of specific films or ones that will never see the light of day like Song of the South.

The NBC one is interesting. My main question is what they own. Mainly what they had made before Universal and Comcast. Something like Fresh Prince I don't see being on there because of Warner Brothers involvement. Having a competitor would not bode well. The same could also apply to shows Universal had on other networks that aren't NBC or Comcast affiliated. I guess unless CBS, ABC, or Fox were involved, they would go to the service next year. There are a lot of movies and shows that can make up a good lot of of the streaming. It may not be deep like Disney, but it shouldn't bore anyone, either.

I think we are heading towards a new era where individual companies are having streaming for themselves. The question lies in how much people are willing to spend and when too many ruin it for everyone.
